Hello ; )
I am Rima!

About Me

Hi, I am Yining "Rima" Cao!

I am currently a third year Ph.D. student in Cognitive Science at University of California, San Deigo, working with Professor Haijun Xia.

I build intelligent interactive system to support visual thinking, storytelling, and human creativity in general.

Priviously, I was a master student at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, majoring in Data Analasis and Human-Computer Interaction. I worked with Professor Eytan Adar . I got my Bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University, China.

Research Publications

I build tools that support creativity and visual thinking with motion.

Elastica: Adaptive Live Augmented Presentations with Elastic Mappings Across Modalities

Yining Cao, Ruabait Habib Kazi, Li-Yi Wei, Deepali Aneja, Haijun Xia

CHI'24

We introduce adaptive presentations that dynamically adjust predefined graphic animations to real-time speech and gestures. Elastica leverages script following and motion warping to establish elastic mappings that generate runtime graphic parameters coordinating speech, gesture, and predefined animation state.

DataParticles: Block-based and Language-oriented Authoring of Animated Unit Visualizations

Yining Cao, Jane L E, Zhutian Chen, Haijun Xia

CHI'23 Best Paper Award (Top 1%)

DataParticles is a natural language-oriented, block-based authoring tool for animated unit visualizations. Creators can author animated unit visualizations that are congruent with their story narratives by writing plain text in a rich text editor.

VideoSticker : A Tool for Active Visual Note-taking and Annotation

Yining Cao, Hariharan Subramonyam, Eytan Adar

IUI'22

We propose VideoStickers , a tool for supporting graphical note-taking from videos. VideoStickers utilizes object detection and tracking and linking to narratives to allow the viewer to quickly `collect' a sticker and integrate the content into motion graphical notes.
